Founded in 2017, Bullock Garden Project began as a school garden project spearheaded by our founder Sonya Harris. With the success of that initial project, BGP has consulted and helped schools, institutions, and local governments get their community garden initiatives off the ground. In addition, BGP offers assistance to individuals wanting to embark on their own growing journey by offering free education and start-up materials. BPG is a registered 501(c)(3) organization.

Sonya Harris

"What I learned is not only how critical and important school gardening could be for reconnecting kids with nature but how it is also important nutritionally. Gardening for kids and families isn’t just about creating beautiful outdoor spaces—it’s also about feeding people."
Born and raised in South Jersey, Sonya Harris is a former special education teacher with over 20 years of classroom experience. As an educator, Sonya believes in taking learning beyond the four walls of the classroom and spearheaded the award-winning Bullock Children’s Garden at the Dorothy L. Bullock Elementary School in Glassboro, NJ. The garden serves to assist in teaching across the curriculum through garden education while providing fresh, organic produce to the local low-income community & helping reduce the impact of the food desert in which the school is located. She loves spending time gardening with children and teaching others how to grow healthy food at home. She is passionate about helping educators learn the fun and ease of incorporating garden-based education throughout the curriculum.
In the Summer of 2022 she'll be launching The Garden Teacher's Yard Farm, where she will provide low-cost, organic seedlings and produce to the public.
